Cycling in London safelySunday October 23rd, 2011
We now all agree that cycling is the best way of going around in London: it is good for you, good for the planet, it saves time, money, etc. I have never ever been so conviced of that as since I bought myself a cute pink Brompton bike. You can see a video of the magic unfold of my Brompton in one of my previous posts.
Just imagine how much less traffic there would be in cities like London, Paris and New York if we would all use a bike!
But whenever I talk about that, people immediatly tell me: but is it dangerous! I do not agree with that…. First of all, of course, you need to wear a helmet. But most importantly, you can avoid busy roads by using some very good IPhone apps like London Cycle or Cycle Streets. Just to give you an idea, below is the comparison between the journey that Google Maps would make me take to go to work compared to cycle streets. Amongst many busy roads, Google Maps would send le in the four-way busy Elephant & Castle rounadbout 🙁
Another personal advice: you need to invest one or ideally two very good locks as 52 bikes on average are stolen in London every day.
