I have wanted to make an insect house for a long time. It took the opportunity of some abandonned wooden cases in our winery to make one.
An insect house is very easy to make: absolutely no DIY skills needed – 0 nails and screws. As a consequence it is a both fun and educationnal activty for kids.
All you will need is:
- Wine wooden cases (or any other type of wooden structure) and some separators
- Wood glue
- Straw
- Dry leaves
- Plant pots
- Reed / bamboo canes
- Old pieces of wood
- Rose / bramble / elderberry stems
- Pinecones
- Logs drilled with various sized holes
All you need to do is to build your home using wooden cases, creating different “rooms” with separators. Fix all this using some wood glue.
Then fill each “room” using your different elements. And decorate at your convenience!
You need to locate your insect home south facing, protected from the wind. WIthin a few weeks, you will be able to see the little insects finding their way in their new home 🙂
